Problem: Volunteers have been observed twisting and bending from the waist when lifting boxes. This action puts them at risk for a back injury. Additionally, it takes staff time to show new volunteers how to sort damaged food items from consumable food items and how to check expiration dates to be sure stock is rotated properly. Being able to watch a training video ahead of their first volunteer task will provide safe lifting techniques and increase the amount of time staff can spend engaging in other responsibilities of the organization.
Solution: This tailored e-learning course for volunteer staff is a module that includes a video clip of proper body mechanics when lifting, descriptions and pictures of different categories of food items, proper storage of these food items and a scenario-based interaction.
Audience: New and/or current volunteers who will benefit from learning proper lifting techniques to avoid injury as well as foundational knowledge of proper sorting and storing recommendations.
Highlights: This course includes engaging interaction and scenario-based knowledge checks.
Process: In developing the food pantry volunteer training, a systematic approach was used. This would have started with SMEs to identify the learning goals and most appropriate modality for this training. In the design phase, a comprehensive design document was developed to outline the structure and interactive elements of the training program for the Healthy Sides Food Pantry. The course came to life during the development phase, through the use of a video clip, appealing photographs of brightly colored vegetables and interactive components such as expandable menus. Upon completion of the development phase, this course for Healthy Sides Food Pantry would be published and implemented in adherence to any compliance framework specific to the food pantry’s requirements (SCORM etc.).
Evaluation: The Kirkpatrick Model’s Level 2 evaluation would assess participant engagement and knowledge retention, while Level 3 would focus on behavioral changes and the practical application of skills. This thorough process ensures a comprehensive and effective training program, aligning with the Healthy Sides Food Pantry goals to keep injuries at or near zero and increasing the availability for paid staff to engage in other responsibilities of the organization.
